OLYMPIC UPDATE: PlaySoup's Not Going To China
As some of you may have heard, PlaySoup is part of a project called the “Light The World Parade” that was officially sanctioned by the Beijing Olympics to be a performing group during the two weeks of the 2008 Olympiad.
Dave was constructing some of the characters for the parade, and we were days away from purchasing our airline tickets when… the Tibet protests began.
The uproar surrounding the torch relay protests caused Beijing and “Olympic Link”, the official arm overseeing all foreign volunteer groups, to reevaluate security measures.
A month ago, we received the news that we weren't allowed to bring the large wheeled and inflatable elements due to “security concerns.”
Then three weeks ago came the official email that cancelled all performing groups not actually in the Olympic ceremonies.
That pronouncement, on top of the national mood of China after the horrendous earthquake in Sichuan, was pretty much the nail in the coffin for our China trip.
There are some possibilities for the parade here in the States and overseas, but as of right now, the Olympic performances are cancelled.
Thanks for your prayers and your support!
